Hello, I’m Sara Newman

UK-based artist, writer, and the person responsible for a small hedgehog called Snoop Hog.

I write and illustrate original watercolour picture books, led by Snoop and his ever-uncooperative prickles. Every illustration is hand-drawn, every word is mine, and there’s no team behind this, just me, my ipad pro, and a hedgehog with big main-character energy and questionable time management.

I also create artwork and digital print files with a full commercial licence included, so other creatives and makers can build their own products from them. And I make things that move, augmented reality cards and prints that spring to life when you point your phone at them. Think the Daily Prophet from Harry Potter, only considerably more hilarious.

Children’s books exist to entertain children. Full stop. No hidden messages, no quiet moralising, just a story a child asks for again and again until the spine cracks and the corners go soft.

That’s the goal. That’s always been the goal.

On a shelf of trustworthy timber—possibly oak, certainly flat—three radiant children’s books huddle beneath the noble proclamation: Bedtime Stories: Fun Rhyming Stories for Kids. These tales are certified bedtime magic, as sure as librarian stamps exist. One cover presents a bear whose expression suggests he’s seen some things; nearby, an assembly of children appears perfectly at home with dinosaurs (clearly a normal Tuesday), and next to them trots a fox in blue socks, making one wonder if there’s a story in where he found them. At either end stand sentinels—a lamp that might secretly long to be the moon, and a plant plotting slow conquest of the windowsill realm.

A rascally rabbit, clearly with more curiosity than sense, surveys its grassy kingdom at the edge of a path that winds decisively into a forest thick enough to have Opinions. Deer loiter conspiratorially on the trail, possibly exchanging woodland gossip under patches of blue sky threading through leaf-laden branches. Towering over all this intrigue are bold letters: *Into the Thicket*, along with the formidable names Gail Kuhnlein and John Megahan—offering an open invitation for rabbits (and their bookish allies) daring enough to risk a little adventure.

On a particularly adventurous bit of pavement, an absurdly chipper hedgehog—animated with the kind of optimism only found in creatures who’ve never had to fill out tax forms—brandishes its self-published magnum opus as if expecting instant literary acclaim. Looming behind is a bookshop all glass and possibility, the kind of place where indie novels lurk hopefully on bottom shelves. To the right stands a dignified red Royal Mail postbox, awaiting correspondence or perhaps just enjoying the scenery. Some well-behaved green shrubs mind their own business in handsome planters by the shop entrance, feigning indifference to all this authorial excitement.
